Stories from a serious case of SpanglishHistorias con un caso serio de Spanglish

Growing up Puerto Rican gave Gabriel a unique perspective on what it means to be American and a serious case of Spanglish that encouraged him to explore nuanced characters in unexpected settings. He grew up in a family of engineers and doctors. But when his island was devastated by Hurricane María, he had too much time to think and even more stories to tell. He daydreamed about a kid who finds a magical gas can for his generator, one that brings him a much needed hot shower. That daydream became El Candungo de Oro, his first production, and it earned him a Student Emmy. With that, he dove into screenwriting.

The road from there ran through the controlled chaos of live television at Telemundo Puerto Rico, where he wrote and produced segments for Raymond Arrieta's daily shows, and on to Los Angeles. There he earned his M.F.A. at Loyola Marymount University and worked in film and television development, covering more than a hundred scripts and helping decide which stories were worth making.

When the pandemic put the world on pause, Gabriel used the time to chase a different kind of story. He had always wanted to be the pilot of his own journey, so he became one, earning his Private, Instrument and Commercial Pilot Licenses. Flying became a new chapter and a lasting passion, and it taught him a few things every writer could use: prepare for everything, trust your instruments, and stay calm when the weather changes.

These days he is back home in Puerto Rico, telling stories in whatever form they need, from bilingual copy to short film. When he isn't writing, he is usually planning the next trip, camera in hand, looking for the small moments that make a place stay with you. It's the same instinct that started with El Candungo de Oro: find the story, then tell it well.

Water is part of every day, and most of the time we look right past it. This series is about slowing down long enough to notice the small things: a single drop breaking a still surface, rain stacking rings on top of rings, a pattern that never holds the same shape twice. There is beauty and harmony in moments we usually take for granted.

The more you thrash around in struggle, the more ripples you make. Accept the calm and the turbulence alike, and the moments of stillness start to stand out.

Your Dog Doesn't Need a Longer Walk. They Need a Different One

By Gabriel Lugo Barrera

Here's something I learned after walking over a hundred dogs as a walker in Los Angeles and Florida: most of us are doing walks wrong. Not badly wrong. Just missing something. Ask yourself this: whose walk is it actually for?

We tend to think a dog's life revolves entirely around ours. And honestly, some of the time that's true. These furballs would follow us to the ends of the earth. But because of that, we also tend to see the walk as something we're doing for them, on our terms. So we walk them the way we exercise ourselves. Steady pace, keep moving. The dog follows along, sniffing for two seconds before we pull them forward. You get home and they seem fine. Maybe a little restless still. You think, maybe I need to walk them longer.

You probably don't. You probably just need to walk them differently.

My mother calls it “going to Marshalls.” She goes because she needs something specific. She stays for 30 minutes because she ran into someone she knows, spotted something she didn't expect, and ended up browsing three aisles she had no business being in. Nobody rushes her out the door. Nobody tells her the throw pillows aren't worth her time. She leaves happy, stimulated, and already thinking about going back. That's a sniff walk. And it's the easiest thing you can do for your dog today.

Think about it this way: when we go outside, half of us are on our phones anyway. Catching up with friends, people watching, doom scrolling through lunch. We have a dozen ways to stay connected to the world. Dogs don't have that privilege, especially indoor pets. The walk is their whole window. And the way they experience it isn't through their eyes. It's through their nose.

Have you ever come home from a friend's place that has a dog and gotten the full sniffspection? That's not just curiosity. That's their version of reading your texts. Dogs have up to 300 million olfactory receptors. Humans have about 6 million. When your dog stops at a patch of grass, they're reading a full story. Pulling them away from that, walk after walk, is like someone sending you a great reel and closing the app every time it gets good.

Animal behaviorists have studied this. A 20 minute sniff walk can leave your dog calmer and more settled than a 40 minute power walk. The nose work engages their brain in a way that a quicker pace never will.

Here's how to do it: after the first 10 minutes, hand them the map. Loosen the leash. Let them stop at the hydrant for 45 seconds. Let them double back. Follow them for once. I learned the hard way not to rush your mom out of Marshalls. Don't rush your dog through the one walk they get today.

That's the whole tip. No special trail, no extra time. Just drop your agenda and let them do what they were built to do.

Watch how they walk home.

The Good Place and the Sitcom That Was Allowed to Think

Why NBC bet on a network comedy about death, ethics and the afterlife, and why it paid off.

By Gabriel Lugo Barrera

The Good Place is a network sitcom that both breaks and reworks classic sitcom tropes. To judge its writing and production fairly, we first have to talk about the relationship between NBC and the show's creator, Michael Schur.

If the name doesn't ring a bell, the shows under his belt will. He wrote and produced The Office, created Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine with his writing partners, and executive produced Master of None. Most of them share one thing: workplace comedy, with memorable characters who come to life in one key location. Over years of hits, Schur earned something rare in network television: trust. So when it came time for his next show, NBC let him follow his gut. And Schur had different plans. Having already made great workplace comedies, he wanted to prove to others, and to himself, that he could make something completely different but just as funny. That's how The Good Place started.

What sets it apart from his other sitcoms is its high concept and its focus on plot. Fans of The Office loved the status quo and resisted any new character or plot point that shifted familiar dynamics. When you comfort watch, you rarely want change or challenge. The Good Place, on the other hand, immediately drops you into morally gray dilemmas and heavy subjects like death and the afterlife, and somehow keeps it all lighthearted and funny. These are subjects most networks avoid at all costs so they don't divide their audience. NBC clearly trusted Schur and the audience he attracts, not only by picking the show up but by letting it end on its own terms after four seasons.

That's how it got made. Another secret to its success is the cast, a mix of established stars and fresh faces. Ted Danson and Kristen Bell are the heavy hitters, and without them the show would have struggled, both in the ratings and in the network's confidence. Danson and Bell share two things. Like the network, they trust and admire Schur's projects and work ethic. More than that, each brought a moral curiosity that let them be genuinely moved by the show's central theme: ethics. You heard that right. This is a network sitcom about philosophy.

This is where the production team stands out from most network crews. They found clear, accessible ways to convey challenging ideas that make you think. You know, the opposite of most network series. They brought paradise to life through CGI and incredible set design, and one of their hardest jobs was bouncing between the afterlife and planet Earth. That's where they prove they're just as creative as the writers. Blink and you'll miss the small visual callbacks to earlier episodes. The attention to detail is immersive, from relatable settings like an apartment or a university square to otherworldly, yet accessible, sets for the Good Place itself. Los Angeles residents may even recognize some of the real locations.

As a writer, I always return to the concept and the intention behind a show, and I don't think I'll ever see one quite like this: a sitcom that constantly pushes its plot forward and isn't afraid of heavy subjects. It's a series about what makes us human, and about the choices our morals and ethics guide us to make. It takes the idea of being the best version of yourself for the people around you and makes it entertaining and accessible, comforting you while it challenges your beliefs. Listen to the show's podcast and you can tell everybody loved working there. It was clearly a collaborative effort, but we all have one person to thank for bringing it to life: Michael Schur.
